Taiko Course 2026 – Drumming, Rhythm & Community

Welcome to ZenDaiko!

Thank you so much for your interest in Taiko and for reaching out to us.

We’re excited to share a bit more about who we are and what our practice entails.

The name Zendaiko comes from two key elements: Zen (禅), referring to the zazen practice that is integral to our training, and Daiko (太鼓), which means “big drum” in Japanese.

The idea to unite both disciplines in the training is simply because of the belief that one cannot understand an art without its context and we believe that zazen is the discipline that most encompasses Japanese philosophy.

Therefore, although the workshop is about taiko, we begin some of our classes with this practice. It helps us connect with ourselves, center our minds, and prepare for the physical and mental demands of the following taiko training. We use zazen purely as a tool to enhance our focus, much like it is used in martial arts dojos.

The class continues with a physical warm-up before transitioning into taiko-specific exercises and repertoire learning.

A Little Info About the Course

No prior experience is required!

This course is designed as a one-year program and offers a comprehensive introduction to Japanese taiko drumming as a musical, physical, and cultural practice.

During the 4-month introductory phase (March–June), participants will become familiar with the basic taiko techniques, rhythm and coordination, while also gaining insight into the cultural background, musical structures, and ensemble spirit of taiko.
The focus is on learning through practice, listening, and shared experience, in a supportive and respectful group setting.

Beyond the introductory phase, the course continues as an ongoing practice, allowing participants to deepen their skills, work on repertoire, and grow as part of the Taiko Community in Europe.

After this initial period, the course continues automatically and is renewed every 4 months, unless cancelled in advance *.
