Taiko Course 2026 – Drumming, Rhythm & Community

Welcome to ZenDaiko!

A Little Info About the Course

No prior experience is required!

This course is designed as a one-year program and offers a comprehensive introduction to Japanese taiko drumming as a musical, physical, and cultural practice.

During the 4-month introductory phase (March–June), participants will become familiar with the basic taiko techniques, rhythm and coordination, while also gaining insight into the cultural background, musical structures, and ensemble spirit of taiko.
The focus is on learning through practice, listening, and shared experience, in a supportive and respectful group setting.

After the introductory 4-month period, participants become regular taiko trainees. In this stage, you will deepen your skills, work on old and new repertoire, perform on stage, and grow as part of the European Taiko Community.*

The name Zendaiko comes from two key elements: Zen (禅), referring to the zazen practice that is integral to our training, and Daiko (太鼓), which means “big drum” in Japanese.

The idea to unite both disciplines in the training is simply because of the belief that one cannot understand an art without its context and we believe that zazen is the discipline that most encompasses Japanese philosophy.

Therefore, although the workshop is about taiko, we begin some of our classes with this practice. It helps us connect with ourselves, center our minds, and prepare for the physical and mental demands of the following taiko training. We use zazen purely as a tool to enhance our focus, much like it is used in martial arts dojos.

The class continues with a physical warm-up before transitioning into taiko-specific exercises and repertoire learning.

(The zazen sessions are currenlty not available, but we are working on bringing them back. Although we still use the philosophy in our practice. Zazen is in everything we do)
